Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is a good home remedy for under-eye bags and dark circles?
I'm only 20, and I have pretty dark circles under my eyes. I don't get alot of sleep, which I know causes it, but with my work hours, my sleep schedule is "out of wack" at best.

I get some puffiness, also. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Don't worry too much about the dark circles...I had them at twenty also...Nine years later they actually look better than they did back then!

Try using vitamin K underneath your eyes at night (it's available at rite-aid, walgreens, any of those places and near the skin care stuff), and a lightweight yellow-toned concealer during the day (it counters the appearance of the dark circles, which are actually caused by blood vessels near the surface of the skin). It's probably genetic.

As for the puffiness, yeah..that sucks, but it's easier to fix. Sleep with an extra pillow to keep fluid from pooling around your eyes when you sleep.

Also, if you wake up with extra puffy eyes, put a cold compress of any kind (those gel eye masks made especially for this work great, but you can also keep a couple of spoons in the fridge especially for this purpose).

Hold the cold thing on your eyes for at least two minutes - it helps a lot.

Cold wet tea bags are supposed to work too, but the cold compress works just as well and requires less effort.

Lastly, sleep as much as you can. Computer screens are horrible for the eyes!

  2. QUESTION:
Is there any possible home remedy for eliminating dark circles or bags under your eyes besides sleep??
i know i sometimes lack sleep but its just my problem.. i just want to get rid of them..

    and take home remedy seriously...

    • ANSWER:
In quite a few books I've read:
1.) slice a cold cucumber and while lying down, place a slice over
each closed eye; (15 - 20 minutes) or
2.) place a dampened tea bag over each eye (not soggy, just slightly
      wet) 15 - 20 minutes)

I've seen both of these treatment suggestions but have never tried it. Hope this works for you.

    Question:
I'm a 22 year old girl, a full time student and have a job that requires me to be outside and work pretty long hours some days.
Unfortunately, i think all of this has something to do with the bags i have under my eyes. They are relatively large & kinda make my eyes disappear when i smile.

If you guys and gals have any home remedies that can reduce these bags/circles, it would much appreciated.
I've tried cucumber and would rather not use any make-up to conceal it.

Any home remedies for getting rid of bags and dark circles under the eyes?
i wake up every morning and there are bags under my eyes from not much sleep. I normally go to bed at 12 or 11 because i can't sleep, and my mum won't let me use the eye roll on because they use harsh chemicals which can damage my skin, so does anyone have any home remedies they could share !!!

  8. QUESTION:
Home remedies for dark under-eye circles/bags?
I've always got bags under my eyes whether I'm tired or not, whether I've slept for 4 hours or slept for 12... I believe it's hererditary as my dad has the same problem - so I'm not sure I can fix that but if I could at least fix the dark lines under my eyes I would be happy enough...

So what are some home remedies I can make up and what should I do with them? I don't want to buy any special creams or whatever because I don't trust the chemicals in them. I just want something natural that I can make up myself. Something tried and tested would be preferred please.

For the record: I live a pretty healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, a diet rich in nutrition and I get the right amount of sleep - so I don't think I could fix the problem via lifestyle change.

  10. QUESTION:
Home remedies for dark circles, bags AND puffiness?
any home remedies for puffiness of eyes, dark circles & bags under? help pleeease! thanks

    • ANSWER:
      you can minise them by:

Slide the fresh potato; place the slides over the eye areas and rest for 10-15 mins. Then, clean the eye areas with water [just wash off the smell will do!].

      or

Smash the fresh potatoes into paste; put the paste over the dark circle areas and rest for 10-15mins. Then wash off the paste with water.

many people are suffer from dark circles under the eyes areas. It could be because of poor blood circulation around the areas and some light massage can help.

      Ingredients:

      Carrot x 200g
      Apple x 100g
      Pineapple x 50g
      A bit of Honey
      Method:
Put carrot, pineapple and apple in the juicer and juice them. When it’s done, put a bit of honey in to make it tasty.

I believe together with regular exercise would certainly help a lot in improving the blood circulation, too - more effective.

      goodluck =)

Bags under eyes and dark circles not from sleep deprivation?
Hi, I just got over a head cold and I have major bags under my eyes that are purple on the inside corners (by my tear gland). Basically, I look horrible. I have been sleeping for at least 9.5 hours at night (I am 16yr/o) and sometimes an hr during the day. I also have allergies and that probably contributes to the purple puffies. Any advice? I would really prefer home remedy advice so I don't have to go out and buy an expensive chemical product.

    Thanks in advance!

p.s. Makeup tips are fine, but I would prefer a way to solve the problem, not cover it up.
Also, my allergies are to wheat, dairy, and nickel. In case that influences you answer in anyway.

      Bye

  14. QUESTION:
Which home remedy for dark eye circles has worked for YOU?
Tea bags are extremely effective in curing dark circles. Do not throw away used tea bags, but refrigerate them for a few hours. Use cold tea bags over the eyes for at least fifteen minutes everyday to find them vanish.
    # Apply a slice of either cucumber (kheera) or raw potato around the eyes every night. Try using them slightly refrigerated or a little cold. This will not only refresh the eyes and improve tear secretion, but also cure dark circles. These wedges can also help relieve stress and tired eyes, main contributors to dark circles.
    # Grate a cucumber (kheera), squeeze to take out its juice and refrigerate. Make a mixture of lemon juice, lanolin cream and cucumber juice and apply around the eye for 10-15 minutes.
    # Make a mixture of almond (badam) oil and honey and apply to the affected areas once a day and rest the eyes. This should help remove dark circles in a few weeks. You can also just use almond oil, massaging it under the eyes for 15 minutes.
    # Castor oil is another good remedy, which calms tired eyes, removes dark circles, and also fosters the growth of lashes.
    # Alternate hot and cold compresses under your eyes for 10 minutes. Then apply a teaspoon of almond oil mixed with half teaspoon of lime juice on the dark surface every night before going to bed.
    # Mix two tablespoon of tomato juice and two tablespoon of lemon juice and then apply this mixture under the eye area. It is a natural cure for removing dark circles.
    # Mint (pudina) leaves are also proven to be very useful for curing dark circles. Crush a few mint leaves and place them under your eyes.
    # Paste made up of turmeric (haldi) powder with some pineapple juice is also very helpful for removing dark circles.
    # Apply rose water using cotton under the eye area daily for removing the dark circles.

  15. QUESTION:
Home remedies for bags under eyes?
i've always had dark circles around my eyes and i think it's genetics. no matter how much sleep i get i always have them..any home remedies to clear or hide it?
sadly i have both :( bags and dark circles. i get tons of sleep too (i'm 15) i will try the spoon one since i don't have any cucumbers in the fridge..lol

    • ANSWER:
Try a cold compress. Close your eyes and cover them with a cold washcloth for about five minutes. Repeat several times throughout the day. That will help constrict your blood vessels, minimizing darkness, and it may help minimize tissue swelling and eliminate some of the darkness.

Hide 'em. More opaque than foundation makeup, cream concealer is made to order for under-eye darkness. Select a cream concealer that's a little lighter than your skin when wearing it under foundation (or the same shade as your skin when wearing the concealer alone). "Paint" the concealer with a small brush into the dark areas. Then take your pinky finger and very lightly pat the edges to blend it in. Finally, powder lightly to help the concealer stay put.

Spread on the sunscreen. Use a sunscreen especially made for the face with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, but preferably 20, all day every day, to keep the sun's rays from darkening the skin under your eyes.

Supplement your foundation. Some foundation makeups contain SPFs of 6 or 8. For full protection you'll still need either a moisturizer or a sunscreen lotion with an SPF of 15.

Eye cream: The newest option. If your circles persist, try an opaque eye cream such as Lancome's Expressive.

Alpha hydroxy acids, used in many newer eye creams decrease wrinkles and lighten and smooth the skin. The most common alpha hydroxy acids are glycolic acids (extracts derived from fruit and other plants). Other new eye creams that look promising include Renova and the cosmetic Cellex-C eye contour cream or gel (a topical vitamin C).

And short of cosmetic surgery, there's not much that you can do about bags under your eyes, except the following:

Pat on concealer. A concealer is more opaque than a foundation and meant to be used sparingly. For best results select a concealer that's just one tone lighter than your foundation. Or, if you're wearing concealer alone, match the concealer to your shade of skin. Since baggy skin tends to be darker, you want to blend it correctly.

Using an eyeliner brush, apply concealer to the dark areas, then blend with your pinky finger, patting very lightly. Finish with foundation and with light powder, or powder alone, to set the concealer.

      Good luck. :) )

  18. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any natural home remedies for dark under-eye circles?
I'm healthy but since having my daughter 2 years ago, I have developed bags under my eyes, which I never used to have.

I know I don't get enough sleep, but reality is, I have a very hectic schedule, so I have somewhat adapted to getting by on 5 hrs a night.

I drink lots of water, eat a well-balanced diet and am fairly active (I work out at least a few times per week).

Does anyone have any tips on other ways to reduce the dark circles? I have heard of the "cucumber" method, but does that actually work? Any tips would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance!
Just to add, the rest of my complexion is fine, I actually have very nice skin because I take care of it. The only problem is the bags....

    • ANSWER:
      I'm sure you'll find a solution here -

      Remedies For Dark Circles

      * An instant dark circles remedy is to use the correct concealer. The shade should be lighter than your foundation. If circles are very dark, choose 2 shades lighter. Great choices can be Revlon New Complexion Concealer, Estee Lauder Smoothing Skin Concealer, Cover Girl Smoothers Concealer, or Neutrogena Smoothing Skin Stick.

      * Apply a good Vitamin K cream. Vita-K Solution gel or Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue help strengthen capillary walls around the dark circles to make them less visible.

      * One should go for laser treatment only if the case is chronic. Lasers can increase production of collagen thereby thickening skin to make dark circles less visible.

      * Home remedies for dark circles can include the following:
      1. Drink plenty of water to combat dehydration.
      2. Wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen to prevent more sun damage.
      3. Get enough sleep.
      4. Leave cold teabags, cucumber or potato slices, or washcloths with ice cubes on eyes for 15 minutes regularly.
      5. Take iron supplements if anemic, but consult your doctor first.
      6. Identify the allergens and avoid them. Whether it be pollen, food, whatever, avoidance is the best solution to this. And avoid rubbing your eyes.

      * Hylexin is the first dark circles eye cream developed for serious dark circles. Featured in several magazines such as Marie Claire, FashionWeekDaily, The Wall Street Journal , Star and Luck.

      * One of the greatest remedies for dark circles is Arbonne's NutriMinC® RE9 Repair. It’s a corrective puffiness and dark circles eye cream that does additional benefits – firming, moisturizing and repairing the delicate tissue around the eye.

I don't want to have to do too much to illeviate them.

    Dark circles under my eyes...?
    Hello!

I am 13 (don't know if age will have anything to do with this but oh well), and I have noticed very dark circles under my eyes for the past few months that haven't gone away. I have read that they are caused by blood resting under the skin, and I've also heard they can be because of lack of sleep, being ill, etc. I am currently sick, and I went to see the doctor, and even they noticed the circles or bags under my eyes. But what i'm wondering is; what ACTUALLY causes them, and is there anyway to get rid/treat dark circles or bags under eyes? Please help! If you have any things (like home remedies) that could reduce the circles, please share. Also, if you know why they are there, please tell me. I'm really wanting an answer. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I've read a couple things about how to help get rid of them:
      1. Try heating up a tea bag (let it be warm not too hot) and placing it over each eye for about 5-10 minutes.
      2. Put a spoon in the freezer for about one hour until its really cold and then place the round side on a closed eye for about 10-15 minutes.
Hopefully those may work a bit.

  25. QUESTION:
Good way to get rid of dark circles around eyes?
I have dark circles/bags under my eyes. They annoy me a lot. I usually put some cover up on them but it only really gets rid of the colour, the faint lines are still there. So what can I do to get rid of the completely? I'm not allowed to go buy any products for it so it has to be home remedies.

I get 7-9 hours of sleep and I use multiple face cleansers etc.

    • ANSWER:
Most of it is genetic. I have them to. Just get lots of sleep, and try not be stressed to much. I also have heard that when you cry a lot under eye circles appear darker. Not sure if it's true tho. Also drink plenty of water. Getting a bit of color in your face as well as putting cold spoons under eyes may help. Get ShiSeido Benefiance Revitalizing Cream. I got mine from Macy's and just a tiny dab of it does wonders on dark circles.

vitamin E oil, olive oil, cucumbers, & a doctor can also help. I have pretty bad ones so this is all from experience.

      Hope this helps. :)

    would be greattllyy appreciated! :D
or any home remedies or products that are great for getting rid of the dark circles under my eyes!

    thanks much [[:

    • ANSWER:
MAC concealer can be too thick for me too- you can use a medium coverage foundation as a concealer; it will be a lot lighter and won't cake. I use my Revlon Colourstay Foundation as concealer; pat it under your eyes with your fingertips as the warmth of your hand will help it melt into your skin. Then I very lightly dust over it with face powder to set it.
Also, use a slightly yellow/salmon toned product to conceal, because dark circles are blue and so the yellow tone will cancel them out the most effectively.
Hope that helps you hon :)

and glasses which are not so commonly known.
      http://www.mydarkcirclesblog.com/2006/11/27/causes-of-dark-circles/

If you would like to apply home remedies to reduce dark circles, here are some of my suggestions:
Buy a box of regular, old fashioned unflavored gelatin (e.g. Knox) from grocery store. Take a small cup or bowl and put in 1 teaspoon of the gelatin mix. Add one tablespoon of boiling water & stir for a minute. Test it on your wrist to make sure it is not too hot. Then, using a cotton ball, pat it under your eyes as you would an eye cream or gel. Go lie down and listen to some music, or take a bath & let it stay on for at least 30 minutes. Then just rinse it off.Gelatin is very high in Vitamin K & Biotin. It will not remove your dark circles on the first application (but you will notice a difference), but if you do it daily for a week, and then 2-3 times a week for maintenance, you should notice a drastic reduction in dark circles.

Puffiness in the eye area can be a sign of toxins in your system but is more often than not, related to dehydration, if you keep your hydrations levels up, by drinking the medically recommended 1-2 litres of water a day, you'll find that they'll lessen over time.

In terms of treating them now, coolness applied to the area will temporarily reduce the puffiness. I recommend used chamomile tea bags; you simply put the tea bag into a cup or on a piece of foil in the chill compartment of your fridge (not freezer) and take it out whenever you feel the need. This works very well, not only because of the coolness but also because of the detoxifying and soothing properties of the tea itself.

If, after trying this and maybe even trying some creams (haemmaroid creams and anti-wrinkle creams etc.) you find that you still have bags under your eyes, it may be that you are genetically predisposed to the condition. If that is the case the only real long term remedy is surgery- to either fill a collapsed area of skin or remove the bags altogether.

But always try the basic remedies before going the surgery route.

      Good Luck.
      :)

  30. QUESTION:
how to get rid of stupid bags under eyes?? ***pics***?
i hate them. its most likely genetics because my mom has bags and dark circles under her eyes really bad and my dad has puffy wrinkles under his eyes. and i get it from my mom. it wont go away no matter how many home remedies i try, no matter how many products i buy and no matter how much water i drink or how much i sleep. its still there. people call me ugly just because of it and i just hate myself and i never ever look people in the eye because i keep thinking that they're staring at my bags. surgery is a big no no. one is because i feel like im too young for surgery, 2. i have school so i cant miss school for my eyes to heal after surgery and 3.we need money more than ever.
also it depends on the lighting. if its good lighting then it doesn't look that bad but in bad lighting (like the florescence in school) it looks horrible. and people keep asking me if i got enough sleep last night.
    please help me!! =(

I'm 15, and I've had dark circles under my eyes for over 2 years. • ANSWER:
Fresh Cucumber slices are the best remedy for bags (pockets of fluid) under the eyes. I have also heard of people using a moist tea bag. Some of the properties here will bring down swelling. If you choose to use the cucumbers, just place a slice over each eye while relaxing in the bath or before going to sleep.
As for the dark circles, you seem very young to have this problem. It would be a good idea to make an appointment with your doctor. You may suffer from seasonal allergies or have another type of allergy that could be effecting your eyes only. The doctor could recommend the course of action and treatment to stop the symptoms for the long-term.

  36. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of the dark circles under my eyes?
I'm 14 years old, and have had bags pretty much all of my life.
I'm a migraine sufferer, and I've never been the type of person to get a good nights sleep every single night.

Recently, my bags have got quite bad, and I often get self concious about them, so I wear my glasses a lot more now.
(I only need glasses for computer work and reading.)

I really hate the dark circles, and wish they'd just go away.
Does anyone have any home remedies maybe, or even products that aren't too expensive as I'm kind of broke. :P
But nothing like Garnier Roll On, because I've got that and it actually DOESN'T work, it just causes me to get a headache.
Even a migraine, or maybe I just associate it with migraines, meh.

    Under-eye circles. Quick fix?
I just got contacts after having glasses for more than half my life. However, I have ugly bags under my eyes and dark circles. How can I get rid of these. I'm only 16 too. The glasses used to hide them but now they're really obvious.

Also, I have a white line on my nose, a tan line from my glasses.

How can I get rid of these things quickly? Preferably with things I can find around the house since I can't go out and buy anything and I'm trying to save my money.

So basically I need some home remedy type things for my problems. :]

    Thank you. :D

    • ANSWER:
      A. Dark circles are famously annoying and unfortunately, there's no way to get rid of them. However, you have 3 basic options for concealing them:

Option 1: Use a proper concealer. Test out the best colors at a department store counter or at Sephora. (Tip: Tell the makeup artist you are looking to correct the undereye circles and are testing several different types before purchase). Choose concealer that's a shade lighter than your foundation. And if your circles are very dark, go 2 shades lighter. You might be choosing a concealer that's too light if you are getting a 'raccoon look.'

      read more here http://beauty.about.com/od/foundationsco...

      How you get dark circles
Dark circles are caused by one of three primary reasons. Here's the quick and dirty on which solution works best for each type.

      - Bone structure. If you have deep-set eyes, shadowing contributes to the dark color under the eyes. Your best bet: camouflage. Look for concealers with yellow undertones, which counteract the bluish cast to under-eye circles.

      - Pigmentation. Genetic hyper-pigmentation is the most treatable form of dark circles. Your best bet: Try a lightening cream or talk to a dermatologist about chemical peels or laser resurfacing.

      - Vasculature inflammation. Late nights, allergies and nutritional deficiencies can enlarge the blood vessels beneath the thin under-eye skin. Your best bet: Take care of yourself! Sounds cliché but drink that water, get your beauty sleep, eat a healthy diet and avoid cigarette smoke (easy enough, right?).

I've noticed that I have dark circles—NOT bags—under my eyes & they make me look tired & bad. I know I'm getting enough sleep cause I sleep at like 9 & wake up at about 6 since I have school. That's about 9 hours of sleep, which is plenty for a 13 year old. Also I don't think it's hereditary cause I remember I didn't really have them when I was younger. I really want tips to get rid of them or at least help get rid of them, plz!! They're really annoying, & I don't really wanna wear makeup!! If u know any home remedies or things like that, I'd really appreciate ur help!! & don't tell me 2 do any of those laser stuff cuz I'm only 13, & I'm pretty sure my mom would never let me nor would I even want 2 do any of that stuff. 39. QUESTION:
How can I keep my eyes looking bright and awake?
When I wake up, my eyes look really pretty. The bags are gone and the dark circles are barely visible and my eyelids look even (for some reason, one is bigger than the other and I really hate it). But only like an hour later, they get droopy and I have really dark under eye circles. I think it makes me look really ugly. Does anyone have any effective home remedies that can help dark circles and eye bags? Also, any makeup tips? Also, is there anything I can do about my eyelids? I don't know if anyone else notices, but I do, and it really bugs me.

    One is hooded like this:
    http://img.xcitefun.net/users/2010/06/185444,xcitefun-hooded-eye4.jpg

The other is like this, like you can barely see the eyelid:
    http://www.sumterplasticsurgery.com/images/p-istock_000011604984small.jpg

I prefer the smaller one. How can I get them both even? Is there some product or make-up trick? I would prefer something that is permanent though, no surgery's though because I'm just 16. Please help, I'm really self conscious about my eyelids and eyes.

  40. QUESTION:
Lines under my eyes? What are they? Would a good concealer hide it?
I don't have bags under my eyes nor dark circles, but I have a line under both of my eyes. I highly doubt there wrinkles, btw, I am 22 and been had these lines under my eyes for a long time since I was a child. It is somewhat noticeable just a tab, but I was wondering:

    1) Does anyone know what they are?

    2) What can I use to atleast get rid of them or hide them?

    2) Would a good eye concealer do the job?

    3) Is there any home remedies to get rid of them or is it genetics?

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, I've noticed I've had them for several years also and I'm 20. I THINK it's some kind of water retention that causes (not dark circles) like a little puffy downward line like on top of your cheek bone (well at least mine is lol). I didnt read that book of a post above me much but it probably has some stuff you can do. I myself havnt tried to get rid of em but basicly what CAN cause it from what I've read is stress, allergies, a high intake of salt, or im guessing a bad sleep schedule.

since im a guy im kind of lazy to do anything about it but you could go as small as keeping your head elevated when you sleep, or you can do the random stuff like put slices of cucumbers on your eyes or chilled teabags for maybe 5 minutes or so to reduce the water retention. and also drink a lot of water. : D

As for my dry skin, I'm actually looking for ways to make it softer. I take a vitiman E pill that helps quite a bit. But I'm looking to make it softer then it is right now. Any product or home remedy ideas to get my skin softer?

There are many causes of dark circles, from age, heredity, allergies, cold or sinus infection, bone structure and glasses which are not so commonly known.
      http://www.mydarkcirclesblog.com/2006/11/27/causes-of-dark-circles/

These are things you can do at home without spending money:

Place two slices of cool cucumber on the eyes for several minutes OR
Moisten two tea bags in cold water, chill them in the refrigerator and place them over closed eyelids for several minutes

Use eyeshadow to bring attention to your eyes, and away from any imperfections. Use a highlighter under the brow. Make up is all about accentuating your beauty, without going over board.

  49. QUESTION:
i need some advice on makeup, skin cream, and cleansers?
well, here's the deal. i'm turning 25 years old soon, and i've realized latley that my skin just isnt what it used to be. i've noticed i've started getting dark circles and bags under my eyes, faint smile lines around my mouth, small signs of crows feet, and a little redness around my jaw on my cheeks. i was wondering what were the best makeups, skin creams, and cleaners to use for people with skin that is starting to show signs of aging? i am very fair skinned, and sometimes sensetitive to some skin cleansers and skin cream. i do wear makeup on a daily basis, usually just a little eyeshadow, mascara, blush, and powder.

since i'm turning 25 soon, i want to start taking good care of my skin. i don't want to spend a fortune, but i'm willing to spend a little extra so i can take good care of my skin.

if anybody has any advice on some good cosmetics, or has any "home remedies" please share with me!

    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Hi! I'm turning 25 too, and I started paying attention to my skin more when I started to wear make-up (21, when I was earning $ to buy it, LOL). Anyway, for 25 y/olds in general, your skin should still be in it's "tip-top" shape. I'm not saying that you're doing something wrong, but it's really high time to shape your skin up.

The best home remedy is drinking lots of water. It replenishes the skin and eliminates toxins in the body the natural way. Also, it's best to quit smoking if you do (it doesn't really do the body good anyway). Always moisturize. Doesn't matter if you use cheap-y products. The key is to moisturize everyday. I've noticed that my skin got healthier after the first month that I moisturize. It also retards that aging of the skin definitely.

For myself, I use Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion and Moisture Surge for the eyes. I'm not partial to high-end products, it's just that I loved the effect that Clinique skin care products have on my skin when I first got a tester bottle of their moisturizer and eye cream. But like I said, even if you only buy Avon or Nivea or any other cheaper product, the key is to do it everyday. I've heard a lot of people rave about Crisco (the vegetable shortening) and how it made their faces smoother significantly. I haven't tried Crisco on my face, but I have in my feet and it did make a significant change in the way the soles of my feet feel. So, it's also something you want to look at. Cosmetics wise, I use a lot of MAC, but for skin care, I'm for Clinique all the way :)

  50. QUESTION:
